XYZ Interactive Technologies develops a low cost sensor that provides an effective method to identify the absolute x, y, and z position of an object in space, as well as its orientation with roll, pitch, yaw. Modern accelerometer sensors measure forces in three directions, or along three axes. Each axis of measurement, called X, Y, and Z, represent an imaginary line along which the sensor can detect acceleration. The images above show that each axis has a fixed orientation relative to the accelerometer sensor within the device.

  • The easiest way to get the Z offset value is to: Home the Z axis. Raise Z and deploy the probe. Move Z down slowly until the probe triggers. Take the current Z value and negate it. (5.2 = -5.2) Set with M851 Z-5.2 and #define ZPROBEOFFSETFROMEXTRUDER -5.2. For X and Y you have to measure the distance.

The Modern Robotics Integrating Gyro sensor reads the rate of rotation around the X, Y, and Z axes. The sensor also calculates a heading based on movement around the Z-axis. The heading value is great for navigation and shows the current heading in degrees from 0 – 359 from a point where the heading value was reset to zero. Yaw=math.atan2((2.((w.z)+(x.y))),1-(2.((z.z)+(y.y)))) With these conversions, and properly calibrating the sensor, the device seems to think that forward (where Yaw=0) would be a vector perpendicular to the side of the board with the “Vin” connection. I.e, a vector perpendicular to the side of the chip with the Vin label, when pointed to.
