  • The layer beneath the tire tread is the casing. Essentially, tire casings are the foundation upon which the tread sits. According to MichelinMan.com, the casing layer consists of threads crisscrossing from one side of the tire to the other. Tire casings are rated by how many threads they contain per inch.
  • Jan 10, 2018 Terrene’s Light tire casing eschews armored layers and uses a higher thread count nylon weave to save weight. With the thread count chosen, tire designers then determine how many layers of casing material are required to achieve the desired results. A single-ply tire will usually offer the lowest rolling resistance at the expense of durability.
  • The inner tire provides casing integrity and the outer tire simply becomes a wearing surface. Years of testing with a dumpster-rescue bike have revealed only one drawback. When eventually necessary, tire or tube replacement can seem like a wrestling match.
